The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region: its diverse landscapes and Mediterranean charm

A bountiful source of inspiration for the greatest painters, the landscapes of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region have inspired the sublime paintings of Cézanne, Van Gogh, Cocteau and Picasso, as well as the literary works of Pagnol and Daudet.

Situated on the border with Italy and on the Mediterranean Sea, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region is renowned the world over for its varied and natural landscapes, which combine cultural and architectural heritage with an unrivalled relaxed lifestyle. From the plains of the Camargue and its many vineyards and olive groves to the snowy landscapes of the Southern Alps with the Ecrins massif and the Mediterranean seaside, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region is full of forests, pine trees and lavender fields, reminiscent of the charm of Mediterranean villages.

The region is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and the Southern Alps mountain range, so the climate is characterised by both a Mediterranean climate by the sea and inland, and an increasingly mountainous climate as you gain altitude.

In addition to its climate and its exceptional quality of life, the P.A.C.A. region also benefits from an ideal location. It includes the cities of Arles, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Toulon, Avignon and Nice. For more popular destinations, consider the towns of Cannes and Saint-Tropez. Walking through the six departments that make up our region, you will discover authentic Provençal villages, old stone houses and small squares in the shade. On the Côte d’Azur, you can enjoy heavenly beaches of fine sand or pebbles. Take the time to admire the wild coastline of the Mediterranean and take a well-deserved break in one of the typical local bistros, where conviviality and authenticity are the order of the day.

Also known for its typical Provencal markets, the P.A.C.A. region offers its inhabitants and visitors colourful and fragrant stalls of fruit and vegetables as well as other local produce. And the plurality of its landscapes is not its only sight to behold: the P.A.C.A region’s gastronomy is yet another jewel in its crown. Enjoy Mediterranean or mountain cuisine, prepared with fresh and seasonal products to feast your eyes and your taste buds, at the best tables of the region’s restaurants.
